Although Beringia, or the Bering Land Bridge, is still viewed as important to the colonization of North America by humans thousands of years ago, it is now believed that humans traveled south of the glacial ice down the Pacific coast, rather than through the so-called Ice-Free Corridor.

The oldest named and recognized archaeological culture in Alberta and the rest of North America is called the Clovis Complex, dating to more than 10,000 years ago.

Although most known archaeological sites in Alberta are buried less than 1 meter deep, sites such as the Stampede Site in the Cypress Hills and Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump have materials buried as deeply as 7 to 10 meters!
